Women have distinctive health issues due to unique biological, social and behavioral conditions. And though some of the health issues affect both men and women, they may affect women differently. Due to unique anatomy, women bear health concerns like breast cancer, cervical cancer, pregnancy, menopause and conditions of female organ. Other issues that widely affect women are PCOS, mental health, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, anemia among others. Depression and anxiety has been observed more frequently among female patients. From heart disease to breast cancer to depression, it is imperative to understand why women are at high risk for these problems.
Every childbearing brings responsibility to provide healthy environment to both mother and child. The high number of maternal mortality rate is often considered a sentinel event in judging the quality of health care systems and reflects inequities in access to health services in different boundaries of world. Although various measures have been taken, approximately 830 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth everyday, according to WHO. Health of newborn is closely linked to the health of mother and thus all women should get access to antenatal care in pregnancy, skilled care during childbirth, and care and support in the weeks after childbirth. Another health concern that largely affects women is Cancer. Breast Cancer and cervical cancer are among the most common type of cancer that affects women globally. Detecting these cancers timely is key to keeping women alive and healthy. Effective programmes regarding early diagnosis, screening, therapy and palliative care needed to reduce the suffering and deaths caused by cancer. Women are often more vulnerable at the two extremes of life. Young women are at risk from STIs, adolescent pregnancy, cancer and unsafe abortion, while older women are at risk of dementia, depression, osteoporosis, cardiovascular and menopause. Understanding that Menopause is a natural progression and that drop in hormone level is not an end of femininity or womanhood can help woman to embrace menopause happily.
In order to achieve health equity throughout the lifespan and diverse communities, it is imperative that each and every woman should have access to information related not only to her reproductive health but to all aspects of her body.
